As we wrap up Term 3, I want to take a moment to celebrate the wonderful growth we’ve seen across our school. Our students have shown impressive progress — not just in their learning but in their confidence and collaboration. It’s been a joy to watch them thrive in classrooms, in the playground, and in all the rich learning experiences we’ve shared this term.
Our school were lucky to receive an Aboriginal Education Services - Explore Sea Country grant which enabled all children to be transported to Bellerive Beach last week. Our learners were engaged in activities to experience, understand and respect Sea Country, connecting to Tasmanian Aboriginal culture and the Australian curriculum. All children had a fun and engaging time, enjoying a sneaky park visit to finish off the day!
A big thank you to all the parents and carers who took the time to complete our recent school survey. Your feedback is incredibly valuable and helps us shape our school’s areas of improvement.
We were also thrilled to see so many families participate in our Parent Communication Week. These conversations are vital in building strong connections between home and school, and we’re grateful for your engagement and support. It was a pleasure to welcome you into our learning spaces and celebrate the growth of all learners.
As we look ahead to Term 4, I’d like to share a brief staffing update: We welcome Mrs Hannah Courto who is teacher for our Launching into Learning program as well as working in our support team. We thank Amanda McShane and Anna MacDonald who are sharing Mr Luttmer’s role while he is on a well deserved long-service leave. We also say goodbye and best of luck to our Student Wellbeing Office, Karl who is moving into a new role.
Thank you again for your continued support. Wishing you all a safe and restful break, and we look forward to seeing everyone back for a vibrant Term 4.
Kind Regards,
Jaime Allen
Principal
LEARNING IN OUR LIBRARY
Our library at Goodwood Primary is a calm and inclusive space, providing activities for students, such as lunchtime clubs like chess, colouring in or games. Our library also is used for flexible learning such as small groups work. Students at Goodwood engage in weekly library activities and this term students have focused on a variety of skills to help support their learning.
Students in Years 3 to 6 have been developing their research skills by finding information in nonfiction texts to developing knowledge about how to "put keywords in a search bar", select good websites that are kid friendly and easy to read. For example, as students have been reading Storm Boy by Colin Theile, with Mrs McGuire we have researched the Coorong National Park. By putting key words into the search bar such as, Coorong National Park Facts For Kids, students were able to take notes from websites that were at their reading level.
Students in Prep to Year 2 have focused on developing their comprehension skills when reading. Students are learning to find literal information such as what they can see and read right there and using inference such as what they can figure out by putting clues together and using their prior knowledge. For example, “the boy and pelican are at the beach. It says Storm Boy in the title. I think the boy and pelican will rescue the boat because I also see the boy holding a rope. I know birds can fly, maybe the bird flies with the rope.”
Please support your child’s learning by helping them remember that library at Goodwood is on Thursdays. If your child has an overdue book, it may be sitting amongst some books at home! Our school’s goal is to make borrowing a positive and engaging habit by helping students find books that match their interests and reading level.
Let’s keep reading!

Our Approach at Goodwood Primary School to support literacy learning
At Goodwood Primary, we are committed to making sure our students receive the literacy support they need—when they need it. That’s why we use an evidence-based approach called the Multi-Tiered System of Supports (MTSS).
MTSS works to help our students’ learning with our school’s phonics program with appropriate level of supports. For example;
- Tier 1 is for all students in Prep, Year 1, Year 2 and Year 3. Student group together for whole class phonics instructions.
- Tier 2 is for students who need extra time and practice with specific phonics skills work in smaller groups.
- Tier 3 provides one-on-one support for some students who need more to help with specific literacy skills.
This system ensures that every student gets the right amount of help at the right time.

Ruby, Indie, Lily and Ojaswi represented Goodwood PS at the b kinder Summit at Lansdowne Cresent Primary on Friday. Other students from South Arm PS, Lindisfarne PS, Lansdowne PS, Taroona PS, Glenorchy PS and Swansea PS spent the day being brave by meeting new peers. The day’s focus was for students to think of a situation/problem that their school could improve. For example, a plan for welcoming new students on their first day, or a plan to develop better understandings about students from other cultures at school. Our students at Goodwood wanted to improve the safety of the playground for younger students when playing sports. Students were then guided through the steps of outline to implement the plan and then had to “pitch” it. Ruby was brave to speak in front of the audience. Ruby, Indie, Lily and Ojaswi will bring their ideas and plan to the SRC and students of Goodwood, to continue to make their school a positive and safe place for everyone.
Our students were enthusiastic risk takers and represented Goodwood PS proudly!

Explore Sea Country - Bellerive Beach Excursion
Last Friday our class travelled by bus to Bellerive Beach to Explore Sea Country. We began the day with the beautiful story Here on Sea Country - written by four Palawa women and illustrated by Aunty Verna Nichols with the Palawa students and Flinders Island and Cape Barren Island schools
Students then completed a range of activities, including:
- Drawing something special to them at the beach
- A scavenger hunt
- Creating a 5 senses wheel
In between learning tasks, students enjoyed exploring the beach, making sandcastles, and playing at the park during recess and lunch.
It was a wonderful day of learning, connecting, and appreciating the special place that is Sea Country.

During literacy we have been working through the Heggerty program and in the last few weeks of kinder we have been focusing on blending words.
When we blend, we put two small words together to make a big word e.g rain - bow = rainbow.
EYLF outcome 5:children are effective communicators.
5.1 Children interact verbally and non-verbally with others for a range of purposes.
Blending words supports children in playing with language and expressing new ideas through combining familiar concepts.

Students in Grade 4/5 and 5/6 have spent much of Term 3 writing "jikoshoukau" (self-introduction) speeches. The speeches cover topics like name, age, birthday, likes and dislikes, hobbies and school life. Students have been practicing their speeches and performing them in class. Ruby C from 5/6, Lilah C from 4/5 chose to enter the statewide Japanese Speech contest. In order to be entered they had to memorise their speeches and perform them in one take. They both did an outstanding job. We wish them both the best of luck. We should know the results by early in Term 4.

Students moving to another school in 2026
Please contact the school office if your child will not be returning to Goodwood Primary 2026. It is now the responsibility of the parent/guardian to notify the school in writing when their child is leaving to attend another school. This is a Department of Education requirement and verbal confirmation is not enough. Once the school has received this notification in writing the enrolment can be closed so the student can then be enrolled at the new school.
Levies 2025
A reminder that school levies are now overdue and payable at the school office. Flexible payment arrangements for families may be organised with the School Business Manager if required.
Kinder | $150.00 |
Prep - Grade 6 | $180.00 |
Payment of levies can be made in full in Term 1 2025 or by instalments using a payment plan. Payment plans are flexible and can continue throughout the school year.
Families can request a payment option. Please contact Ros Ackerley (School Business Manager) if you require a payment plan.
Levies can be paid using the following options:
- At the school (by EFTPOS, cash or cheque)
- At Service Tasmania (by EFTPOS, cash or cheque)
- Through BPAY (using the Biller Code and Reference on your invoice)
- By mail, forward your cheque, money order or credit card details to the school, with the payment slip from your invoice attached (payable to the Department for Education, Children & Young People).
- Using Centrepay, a service provided by Centrelink.
Families who are supported through the Student Assistance Scheme (STAS) do not need to pay levies. Applications for the Student Assistance Scheme may be made online, or paper forms can be provided at the school office.
School and office hours
A reminder that our gates open at 8:30 am. Students are not to be left unaccompanied by a parent/guardian until 8:30 am when staff are on duty. The office also opens at 8:30 am. Students are to be collected promptly at 2:50 pm. If you will be late collecting your child at the end of the day you will need to nofify the office on 6792 9100.
Student long absences in 2025
If your child is going to be absent from school for longer than a few days a Student Absence Approval Form must be completed by the parent/carer and approved by the Principal. The form is available from the school office.
Late arrivals
If your child arrives at school after 8:50am unaccompanied by a parent/guardian, the office will be marking attendance as unexplained other. The procedure for late arrivals will be as is for unexplained absences in that office staff will be calling the parent/guardian to clarify the reason the student was late arriving to school.
Student Absences
A reminder that if your child is absent from school for any reason that you notify the school office by 9:30 am of that day. You can either contact the school office on 6272 9100 or email goodwood.primary@decyp.tas.gov.au
Did you know if your child has 10 days off school per year, that by Grade 4 they are 1 year behind?
The best thing for your child's future is to come to school every day.
Student Medication
Please advise office staff and your child’s class teacher if your child needs to take medication during school hours so arrangements can be made for the medication to be administered.
It is a Department of Education requirement that the following forms must be completed and signed before the commencement of dispensing medication to students: ‘Administration of Routine Medication Authorisation Form for Parent/ Guardian’; and ‘Administration of Prescribed Medication Authorisation Form for Doctors’. The administration of medication to students is undertaken by Admin staff who will ensure it is taken correctly, details (e.g. date, time, dose etc) entered on the student’s personal medication sheet, and signed by a staff member and witness.
Medication is kept locked in the school safe or safe room. Students should not have any types of medication in their school bags.

At our Meet and Greet Assemblies we celebrate the students who have been caught following our Goodwood Primary School Values. If an adult or student observes someone doing something that shows Connection, Courage, Growth, Respect and Responsibility they fill out a Positive Detective slip. The student is shown the slip as immediate feedback and positive reinforcement. The slip is then placed into a big bucket and we draw names out of the bucket like a raffle and then whoever gets drawn out wins a small prize.

Staff Carpark & Student drop/pick-up area
REMINDER
A reminder that the carpark at the rear of our school is NOT to be utilised by families. Student and family safety is of upmost importance and this can be a busy space at the beginning and end of the day.
Our carpark has become quite congested due to increased staff at both Goodwood Primary School and Tas eSchool. We are again asking parents/carers to not enter the staff carpark when dropping off and collecting students. The carpark is for school staff of Goodwood Primary School and Tas eSchool and can be dangerous for students. The exception is for those parents whose child/children have a disabled parking permit.
To ensure the safety of our students and staff please follow the information below:
Students are to be dropped off and collected via the Elmsleigh Road carpark.
We thank you in advance for keeping our students safe!
Enrolments are now being accepted for students commencing in Kindergarten in 2026. If you have a child that was born in 2021 who will be commencing at Goodwood Primary next year, please collect an enrolment form from the office.
We use a variety of communication platforms - including Schoolzine and SeeSaw - to keep our families informed and engaged. If you're having trouble accessing any of the following methods, please don't hesitate to contact our school office. We're here to help and will ensure you stay up to date with all the latest information and events.
As the UV Index is now starting to go up, school hats will be required to be worn commencing next Monday 8 September and into Term 4.
Hats can be purchased from the school office for $9.00.
(Don't forget to put your child's name on it)
